Topic meeting – EMC design (in English)
This time we will go a bit deeper into the EMC design of the power distribution in equipment. As some of the presenters are English speakers, the meeting will be in English language.
As usual we will update with the latest news on EMC standardisation.
We will hear about power electronic circuits from specialists at Aalborg University (AAU). The emphasis will be on how the circuits produce the electromagnetic noise that concerns the EMC properties of the construction, and which components are involved in the noise generation. This also includes description of the critical components for the function, such as power switches, storage capacitors (DC link capacitors), and some of the magnetic components. The function of a PFC circuit is described. New EU requirements for conducted emission in the range 9-150 kHz are on the way, and may be a challenge in the future.
During the day, a demo is made of lifetime prediction for selected components in a motor drive using a prediction tool developed by AAU.
We go further into the details about the lifetime of film type capacitors during the presentation of the Master Thesis of Dennis Høj (SDU Odense). The influence from humidity on the lifetime is presented, and the test setups, practical aspects of the testing, and the results and conclusions are given. Practical equipment will be available for this part of the presentations.
Finally, we enter the world of EMC design and especially the possibility to use shielding as an EMC design tool. Some theory is presented, and practical examples are shown and presented by the manufacturer Mekoprint. Also during this presentation practical equipment and samples are available to see and to touch.
Welcome to a day that is focused on the practical properties of circuits and components – and their physical parameters.
* Det er gratis for EMC Klubbens medlemmer at deltage med op til to deltagere.
Program
Time | Description |
09.00 – 09.20 | Coffee, bread |
09.20 – 09.50 | News from standardisation A short update on EMC standardisation. Per Thåstrup, FORCE Technology |
09.50 – 10.40 | Power electronics. The main characteristics of a typical motor-drive and the design implications on the major circuit components such as switch transistors, transformers, capacitors, and parts of the power filter. The function of PFC circuits and the impact on the frequency ranges 0-2 kHz and 9-150 kHz will be described. New requirements in the range 9-150 kHz are on the way, and may be a challenge in the future. A short demo of a lifetime prediction tool will be given either during this presentation or during the presentation given by Dennis Høj. Prof. Pooya Davari, AAU (Monday), Prof. Huai Wang, AAU (Tuesday) |
10.40 – 11.00 | Coffee break |
11.00 – 11.30 | Power electronics – continued.Stress, wear, and lifetime of the circuit components will be touched, and a short demo of a lifetime prediction tool will be given. AAU continued |
11.30 – 12.00 | EMC design, ”power integrity”, EMC, shielding, and filters. |
12.00 – 12.45 | Lunch Break |
12.45 – 13.45 | Presentation of Master Thesis ”Development of method for predicting lifetimes on DC link film capacitors”. The presentation describes the thesis and the experiments performed. Humidity as a stressor is described, the coupling to lifetime prediction is shown, and some failure mechanisms for the capacitors are described. Practical setups and samples are available during and after the presentation. Master Student Dennis Høj, SDU (Monday) – Per Thåstrup on Tuesday – as Dennis holds his Master Lecture in Odense |
13.45 – 14.15 | Coffee, cake – and a chance to check test setups and sample parts. |
14.15 – 15.30 | EMC design with emphasis on shielding. Mekoprint presents practical designs for on-PCB shielding solutions. How is the shielding specified, chosen, produced and integrated in the construction? Practical setups and samples are available during and after the presentation. Business Development Manager Uffe Sondrup Bach, Mekoprint, supplemented by some details on shielding properties by Per Thåstrup |
15.30 – 15.45 | Final discussion and wrap-up. Per Thåstrup |
